Knights of Columbus 3212, one of Tillsonburg's original Relay for Life teams

They don't wear shiny armor to Relay for Life, but the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Council 3212, do have a castle.

These days the multi-tiered castle comes complete with lights and glow-in-the-dark dragon head, and it's been a staple at Tillsonburg's Relay for Life for the past 13 years.

"We keep adding to the castle," said Knight Mike Holly. "It was originally built and painted by about 20 Knights, a collaborative team effort."

"How many years have we been at this Relay?" asked Ray Sorochan, Grand Knight of Council 3212.

"All of them," came back the replay.

"The beginning, we haven't missed since the beginning," said Holly.

"When did it start?" asked District Deputy Vince Molloy.

"Thirteen years," said Knight Brian Stephenson. "We were here every year, I think. I know I've been here since the beginning," he added with a laugh.

"We also have more four walls," noted Sorochan. "But we didn't put them up this year. Maybe next year."

The Knights of Columbus traditionally collect sponsor/pledges for the Relay, said team captain Vince Molloy, District Deputy. This year's team, which had about a dozen members, collected nearly $1,000, which goes to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Most of the team doesn't stay all night, but Sorochan said a few are usually there for the duration. And they walk the track, said Molloy, who had done a half-dozen laps himself.

While overall attendance at Tillsonburg's Relay for Life seems to have dipped since the first few years, Sorochan noted fundraising totals are still good.

"We (Tillsonburg) are a big fundraiser for cancer," said Sorochan. "This is a very, very generous town... this town is just phenomenal. Since I've moved here, I just can't believe how generous the people are. Just wonderful."
