Jack Whitmore, 87, received the Tillsonburg District Chamber of Commerce 2014 Citizen of the Year Award, presented in partnership with the Town of Tillsonburg, during a ceremony Thursday night at The Carriage Hall.

The award, which dates back to 1978, is presented to an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to our community, with no expectation of personal gain. Unselfish volunteering of personal time and talent towards the betterment of our community are the hallmarks of this award.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony were Mayor Dave Beres (presenting on behalf of the Town of Tillsonburg), Ernie Hardeman (presenting a certificate on behalf of MP Dave MacKenzie), Gord Reynolds, Bruce Kendrick, John Goodbun, Dr. Bill Pine, Rev. Fred Hagle, and Marcel Rosehart, leading to Whitmore accepting the award from Rosehart (on behalf of the Tillsonburg District Chamber of Commerce).

A long-time member of the Tillsonburg Lions Club, active with VON Sakura House as a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, Whitmore also served on town council for eight years, as well as six years as a representative to Oxford County council.
