9th Annual Footprints in the Sand Poetry & Prose Contest

Article content

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the beloved poem, Footprints in the Sand, written by Tillsonburg native Margaret Fishback Powers.

One day I dreamed a dream

I was walking along the beach with my Lord.

To help celebrate the occasion, organizers of the 9th Annual Footprints in the Sand Poetry and Prose Contest have asked for submissions using the theme: 'My Town: A Reflection of 50 Years.'

"Because this is her hometown, she (Fishback Powers) has always had a private function here... and every year we have done a poetry contest in conjunction with that – every year for the past nine years on the Father's Day weekend," said Irene Hurley, a family friend. "This year, because it's the 50th anniversary, our committee decided to do a Gala, in addition to the poetry contest."

Submissions for the following age categories will be accepted: Elementary School Grades 1-4 Poetry; Elementary School Grades 5-8 Poetry; High School Grades 9-12 Poetry; Adult 18-plus Poetry; and Adult 18-plus Prose (1,000-2,000 words).

Entries must be received by June 1, 2014. Submit entries (in person) to the Annandale National Historic Site, Sears Tillsonburg, Station Arts Centre and the Tillsonburg Public Library.

First place received $100 and a special signed edition book. Second place receives $50 and special signed book, and third place $25 and a 50th anniversary edition of her poem. Prizes will be awarded on Saturday, June 14, at the Annandale National Historic Site from 1-3 p.m. during Fishback Powers' book signing event.

Information on the poetry contest has been given to the local schools, churches, and service clubs. It's been advertised in the library, and by the Town of Tillsonburg.

"It closes June 1st, so there's not a lot of time left," said Hurley, noting that in past years, depending on school participation, they've had up to 100 entries. "We have had some submissions, but we are hoping for more."
