Wilcox wins VHSS junior boys title

Article content

Jarred Wilcox was consistently out front Monday at the annual Valley Heights Secondary School track and field meet.

Wilcox won the junior boys 400m (1:01.79), 800m (2:33.81) and 1500m (5:25.07), as well as Friday's junior boys 3000m (11:50.40), earning enough points to win the VHSS junior boys individual championship.

"It went all right," said Wilcox after the 1500m, which combined athletes from other age divisions. "It was just 'set my own pace' and go. The track was a little bumpy, but otherwise it was pretty good."

He did the same last year winning each of his 2103 VHSS midget boys events, and on Monday showed the most improvement in the 400m. But his shortest distance event won't be one he will race at NSSAA next week in Simcoe (Holy Trinity).

"It'll be this one (1500m), the 3000m, and the 800m."

Distance runner David Bacro finished second behind Wilcox in the 1500m, third in the 400m (his "weak" event), and second in 800m and 3000m.

"Today we had a minimum of three (events) and a maximum of five. At NSSAA, it'll probably either be the 3000 or the 1500 for me – they're my strongest events."

Bacro's gameplan Monday was keeping pace with the leader.

"Yeah, keep up with Jarred," he smiled. "And rounding the last bend just sprint as hard as I can. And don't stop, don't let anyone pass."

Running in the same 'mixed' 1500m race, senior girls winner Megan Wilcox, Jarred's older sister, stayed with Bacro most of the four laps.

"She was," Bacro nodded. "I really thought she would pass because she's a really good runner."

Against her brother, Megan was okay with conceding victory.

"I think he's got me by quite a bit," she laughed.

But Bacro was still in range on the last lap and Megan was pushing to pass.

"Yeah, I was trying to," she nodded. "He had a bit more energy at the end than me. I liked the grass track – it makes you run slower, but..."

But the grass is easier on her shins. Megan, who was running with KT Tape (kinesiology tape) on both legs to help with shin splints she developed in March ("just because it was so frozen"), is back in training after taking some time off.

"They seem pretty good now."

Winner of the senior girls 800m, 1500m, 3000m – setting new school records in the 800m and 1500m – and second in 400m and 400m hurdles, Wilcox plans to run in the longer distance events at Holy Trinity next week.
