Article content

Winter is a great time to look for birds.

On Saturday, Jan. 25 join Long Point Region Conservation Authority’s (LPRCA) outdoor educator Fiona Street for a trek through Backus Heritage Conservation Area, listening for the “chicka-dee-dee-dees” of the black-capped chickadee.

The Chickadees at Backus program starts at 1 p.m. inside the Conservation Education Centre with children’s crafts activities and an opportunity to view the wildlife displays. A brief presentation and chickadee-themed story at 1:30 p.m. are the introduction to the guided nature walk at 2 p.m.

Enjoy the friendly behaviour of chickadees close up on a nature walk. Learn about the habits of this bird and try to feed them from the hand. After the snowy trek through the forest, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate back at the Conservation Education Centre.

Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for snow-covered trails.

Admission to the Chickadee special event is $2.00 per child, $4.00 per adult or $10.00 for a family.

In the event of inclement weather, the indoor portions of the Chickadee program will still be offered, with the hike cancelled. For more information, call 519-586-2201, Extension 5 or email outdoored@lprca.on.ca.

Backus Heritage Conservation Area is located on the Second Concession Road, 2 kilometres north of Port Rowan. Check the LPRCA website at www.lprca.on.ca for a complete listing of special events and guided nature walks taking place at Backus Heritage Conservation Area in 2014.
