Not so mature just yet

Article content

Don’t ya’ just love a Canadian winter.

I don’t really know what’s going to happen by the time you read this, but so far this week it’s been Christmas card weather – snow, sunshine and cold. Predictions for Friday state rain so that will really mess things up.

Last Saturday Morgan and I shovelled snow in the late morning but it kept snowing lightly and blowing the rest of the day. We enjoyed some hot chocolate and snuggled up in front of the fireplace thinking we might have to shovel again later. The weather stayed miserable so I missed a Christmas party that evening, making what I considered a mature decision to stay off the roads as the weather stations suggested.

Was quite shocked Sunday morning to see how much snow had accumulated overnight. Thought I might just make a run at it for church but decided that was not such a good idea. Can’t believe how mature I am finally getting to be.

Between Morgan starting at the road, shovelling the hard stuff the road grader had deposited and me starting at the back door and garage where it was much easier we got the driveway cleared by early afternoon. Thinking we should take advantage of the opportunity we agreed to head to town to finish up some shopping. Then thinking we should take advantage of some unplanned open time we chose to go to the movies first.

We used to go to the movies all the time but his taste in movies has drifted far from our Shrek days. I vividly remember going with him and a friend to see some Star Wars movie. Don’t remember which one but it was horrendous. It was two hours of blowing up things, loud explosions, flashing lights, screaming, darkness, ugly creatures and slimy things. They loved it and thought I was out of my mind when I said there was no story or plot. They obviously felt it didn’t need a plot or storyline.

Morgan thought we should see The Hobbit.

“You’ll love it Gramma,” he said. I wasn’t so sure but went along with the idea and you know what? It was a pretty good movie. Although there was a lot of blowing up things, loud explosions, flashing lights, screaming, darkness, ugly creatures and slimy things there was an interesting story. There was obvious good guys and bad guys, well sort of, and a reason for all the noise and fighting.

We had a great time and even got the shopping done before supper. Maybe I am not as mature as I thought but that is OK with me.
