Wingfield returning to Tillsonburg

The Annandale Fundraising Committee is hoping Tillsonburg and area residents will stuff a little comedic theatre into their Christmas stockings.

Stockbroker-turned-farmer Walt Wingfield, a character brought to life by playwright Don Needles and made famous by actor Rod Beattie, is returning to Tillsonburg for his final visit.

‘Wingfield Lost And Found’ is the seventh and latest edition in the popular series and will take to the Otter Valley Playhouse Friday May 30, Saturday May 31 and Sunday, June 1. Supported financially by Scotia Bank, and based on past success, the Annandale Fundraising Committee elected to book ‘Wingfield’ for a repeat performance.

“This will be the last chance for Tillsonburg to see a Wingfield performance,” said Bill Pratt, chair of the fund-raising committee. “We’ve had great community support for past performances, and we already have fans putting tickets on their shopping list for next year.”

Wingfield Lost and Found is the final installment of what will conclude as a seven-play series. In it, a record drought has hit Persephone County and wells on the Seventh Line are drying up. A search to locate a new well on Wingfield Farm ensues, but distractions abound: a high-tech cattle drive, a battle with ground bees, a feud with a red-tailed hawk, an eccentric line-up of water witches and a well-driller who's only too happy to perforate the ground at forty dollars a foot. Is it the end of farming for Walt and Maggie, or can the precious liquid be found?

Rod Beattie portrays all the characters in familiar and award-winning fashion. Douglas Beattie directs the shows.

Tickets are $45 each (including HST) and are available at Annandale National Historic Site. Those interested in more information are invited to call 519-842-2294.

“Proceeds from the Wingfield performances will go towards funding programs offered by Annandale National Historic Site,” said Curator Patricia Phelps, adding that tickets sold very quickly for last year’s show. “They do make great Christmas gifts,” she concluded.
