LPRCA taking orders for spring tree planting

Article content

The Long Point Region Conservation Authority (LPRCA) is now accepting tree orders for spring 2014 planting.

If you own property within the Long Point Region watershed, and you would like to plant trees next spring, call the LPRCA now. You can order trees and do the planting yourself, or you can sign up to have the trees planted for you, at an additional cost.

"We offer a very wide variety of native tree species, but some quantities are limited, so customers are encouraged to get their orders in as quickly as possible to ensure the best selection," explained Paul Gagnon, LPRCA’s Lands and Waters Supervisor, in a media release.

Landowners are encouraged to place their order, whether for trees planted by the LPRCA or for plant-your-own trees before Dec. 20, 2013.

LPRCA staff will be conducting site visits with landowners to create planting plans for next year. Sites may have to be prepared to be ready to plant in the spring. A phone call to the LPRCA now means your name will be added to the list for site visits.

The LPRCA can also help landowners obtain grants to offset some of the cost. Projects such as windbreaks, shelterbelts, riparian buffers and large block plantings can receive grants covering 70-90 per cent from sources such as Trees Ontario, municipal roadside planting programs and Rural Water Quality Programs available in the counties of Brant, Elgin, Haldimand and Oxford.

LPRCA planted 96,000 seedling trees on about 125 hectares (300 acres) for landowners throughout the watershed this past year.

For more information about ordering trees or LPRCA’s planting programs, contact Lands & Waters Supervisor Paul Gagnon at 519-842-4242, ext 232 or email watercare@lprca.on.ca.
