Eden area family loses home to fire Saturday

A family of five, including three young children, lost their home Saturday in a fire on Ridge Line, south of Eden.

“The occupants of the residence were not home at the time,” said Deputy Chief Chris McQuiggan of the Municipality of Bayham Fire and Emergency Services. “The fire was reported by a neighbour, and when the neighbour discovered it, the fire had already consumed a good portion of the house.”

Cause and determination of the fire, through investigation as of Monday, was unknown, but McQuiggan said it did not appear to be a suspicious fire. Damage estimates were also unknown at this time.

Firefighters from Bayham's Station 1 and Station 2 (Port Burwell and Straffordville) were called at 4:43 p.m. Saturday, and were on site four to four-and-a-half hours. Firefighters from Tillsonburg and two tankers with personnel from Malahide Township assisted, but they were unable to save the house.

“It's a total loss,” said McQuiggan. “I believe the owner said it was a home that was established in the late 1800s, and with the construction we were looking at, yes, this house was constructed in that time period.”
