Bantams have 'Dickens' of a time

The Tillsonburg Oxford Source For Sports Bantams had a ‘Dickens’ of a time in a 3-2 overtime loss to Dorchester in the PK Construction Inc. Roy Beechey Memorial Rep Tournament championship final Sunday in Tillsonburg's Kinsmen/Memorial Arena.

Their tale of two finishes had its best of times 1:15 prior to the end of regulation, as captain Seth Lamoure blasted home a game-tying power-play goal from the right point, teeing up a nifty pass from captain Alex Sutherland.

"I didn't know where the puck was at that point," said Lamoure, who was focussed simply on receiving the pass, before taking a quick glance toward the Dorchester net.

"He picked a corner, shot it and it went in," said teammate Nick Lanthier, at the time battling to hold a screening position on the left edge of the opposing crease.

Tillsonburg's worst of times came just 40 seconds into the extra three-skater-on-three-skater period, as the visitors' Justin Seguin buried the game-winner.

"At first I was just said," admitted Lamoure. "But you always have to think about the future. There's more tournaments and more important tournaments than this one.

"Just got focus on that."

"We had our ups and downs," agreed Lanthier. "But we learned a lot this tournament."

The Source For Sports Bantams opened their draw with a 4-2 victory over Kincardine, scoring four consecutive markers after spotting their opponents a two-goal lead. Lanthier got Tillsonburg on the board with help from Seth Robinson and Lucas Deutsch; Lamoure squared accounts assisted by Lanthier and Nehemiah Dube; Sutherland netted the eventual game-winner assisted by Deutsch; and Matthew Meharg added an insurance marker with help from Mitchell Ryksen.

The Source For Sports Bantams shut out Port Stanley in their second game, paced by two-point performances from Dube (goal and an assist) and Lamoure (two assists). Shane Brazier, Lanthier and Jarrod Winters added goals and Sutherland and Brandon Odorjan an assist apiece.

Tillsonburg closed out round-robin play with a 4-1 win over Belmont, paced offensively by Odorjan with a pair of goals and Deutsch with a pair of assists. Robinson and Meharg added markers and Ryksen, Remi Dejaegher, Brazier and Evan Scruton contributed helpers.

The Source For Sports bantams built a 5-1 lead through two periods en route to a 6-3 semi-final victory over Ridgetown. Dube finished with two goals and two assists, Winters two goals and an assist, Ryksen and Scruton a goal each, and Meharg (2), Lamoure (2), Austin McCrossin and Sutherland contributed assists.

Dorchester's TJ Goulden opened scoring in the final, a goal countered by Meharg, with help from Dejaegher and Scruton. Dorchester's Alex Pettipiece gave his squad a 2-1 lead with 8:25 to play in the third, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

"Obviously disappointing losing three-on-three in overtime in the final," said Tillsonburg coach Terry 'Gump' Hildebrant. "It's a flip of the coin who gets possession first. We lost the initial battle and never regained it."

Despite the loss however, Hildebrant agreed with his players' assessment the overall experience had in fact, been a pretty good - and productive time.

Dorchester may well be an OMHA BB opponent Hildebrant continued, and Sunday's final provided the opportunity for Tillsonburg to measure itself head-to-head.

"We want to be as good as the teams we have to beat in the future," he explained.

And despite the final's outcome, the way the game played out, indicated the Source For Sports Bantams are certainly in the game following what Hildebrant termed a 'positive loss.'

"You have to look at it that way," he said. "We lost the game, but so many good things happened."
