Celebrating Halloween in poetry

Article content

Welcome back for a brand new column from Dharma and Alex.

This past week the Grade 5 and 6 students went on a class trip to an Iroquois village in Delaware for their social studies unit. Students learned so much and had a great day.

Recently Mr. Perras came to the Grade 8 class for two days to teach the students all about robotics and work at becoming better problem solvers.

Getting into the spirit of Halloween this year at Sacred Heart has changed a bit. Something different to set the tone this year, a poetry contest was held for this year’s Halloween hosted by the students’ council. All week students have been submitting their scary and creepy masterpieces. Everyone is winner but the student’s council chose the following aspiring writers as winners of the competition: Keegan Grade 3, Breanna Grade 6 and Paige Grade 7. Their winning poems are included at the end of this column.

To celebrate Halloween, students can bring in costumes and all the primary students and even some juniors will be having Halloween activities and games in their classrooms followed by a dance for students in each of the divisions.

Students are reminded to remember all of the safety rules to be safe and have fun! Happy Halloween!

The Candy Witch

Hear the crackle of the house

Also the loud squeal of the mouse

Taste the candy going down

Then you see a bright green frown

The witch is here and very near

Then my eyes filled up with fear

The witch was green and very scary

And her wart was very hairy

She was walking close and very slow

I was so terrified but I couldn’t go

She handed me a paper bag

I just kept staring at that hag

Actually she was very handy

She gave me a bag full of candy

She rode away on her broom

While I yelled a big thank you!

Paige, Grade 7

The Halloween Patch

As I walked down the large path

I came across a pumpkin patch

As a pumpkin gave me an evil stare

I was brave enough to not care

As the seedless pumpkin watched me

I sang and skipped with glee

“Oh what a great Halloween it will be”

It was a full moon, what a scary night

But I was glad the moon made it really bright

As I looked at the pumpkin turn red

I was stunned to see it turn into a head

Then I ran and woke up from my bed

Breanna, Grade 6

Halloween Night

A family went out on Halloween night.

Thought they saw a skeleton and couldn’t believe their sight.

If you see a coffin,

Don’t look inside because there’s probably a goblin.

You always see a bat on a Halloween night

but you have you ever seen a cat?

And although vampires are dead

They still have to brush their teeth for bed

Keegan, Gr.3
