Hogarth Insurance Atom AEs win Caledonia Challenge Cup

The Tillsonburg Hogarth Insurance Atom AEs went 5-0 in the Caledonia Challenge Cup last weekend and won the championship over the Oro Thunder.

Tillsonburg opened the tournament against league-rival Simcoe early Friday morning skating to a 3-2 win. Tillsonburg got on the scoreboard first in the second period, and Simcoe responded. Tied 1-1 heading into the third, Tillsonburg took a 2-1 lead with six minutes left only to have Simcoe tie it up again. Tillsonburg's 3-2 game winner was tapped in with just 1:32 on the clock.

Tillsonburg then met up with the Oro Thunder and beat them 3-1, but the score did not reflect the intensity of the game. At any time, the score could have changed in the blink of an eye.

The Tornadoes took four penalties leaving the AE atoms playing short-handed for eight minutes. Tillsonburg goalie Tristin Zeller played outstanding, and with the Oro Thunder applying the pressure he kept the team in the game.

It was off to the semifinals against a strong Woolwich team. After an intense end-to-end game, the Tillsonburg won 2-0 earning a spot in the Challenge Cup final Sunday vs Oro.

The Oro Thunder came out hard Sunday afternoon. The Tornadoes started a bit shaky and soon saw themselves facing a 2-0 deficit. The boys settled in and remembered all that has been taught in practice.

Brady Rangel stood his ground in front of the Oro net which paid off with a tap-in after a scrum. Tillsonburg's tying goal was a fantastic shot from the point by Nick Behman, going up and over the goalie, making the score 2-2 heading into the third.

After a fantastic team play, everyone on the ice had a hand in the winning goal. Brady Rangel was credited with the bang-in past the Oro goalie, but every Tillsonburg player touched the puck to get it to the net.

End-to-end play with an intense crowd saw Tillsonburg's Ethan Scaman taking a penalty with 2:02 left on the clock. Penalty killers on the ice and quick shifts were the key until Brady Rangel's collision at center ice saw Tillsonburg go down to three skaters and 1:32 left on the clock. Oro pulled its goalie skating six vs Tillsonburg's three, but the Tornadoes worked hard icing the puck and clogging up the neutral zone to hold off the pressure and win the game 3-2.
