In less than 24 hours, Norfolk County OPP made two substantial marijuana seizures totalling more than $300,000.

“Anytime we get drugs off the street is a good day,” said Const. Ed Sanchuk with the Norfolk OPP.

On Tuesday morning, about 172 marijuana plants valued at $172,000 were discovered growing in a cornfield near Walsingham Townline Road. The culprits had cleared the corn to make way for the grow-up.

The plants were removed by the police. No arrests have been made.

On Tuesday evening, around 8:50 p.m., police executed a search warrant on a 5th Concession property near Houghton where they seized $168,000 worth of marijuana plants.

Bear spray and a conductive energy weapon (Taser) were also seized by police.

Sanchuk said people in the drug trade industry have weapons to protect themselves and their product, which is dangerous.

“Marijuana grow-ops pose a real threat to public and police safety,” said Sanchuk.

Police remind residents not to approach suspected grow-ops but rather contact police at 1-888-310-1122.

A 28-year-old Norfolk County man is facing marijuana possession and production charges in connection to the Houghton drug seizure. He has also been charged with two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon.
