Norfolk OPP ‘harvested’ an estimated $172,000 of illegal marihuana plants from a cornfield along Walsingham Townline Road, South Walsingham after being contacted by a concerned citizen Tuesday morning.

The initial call came in at 11:03 a.m., reporting suspected marihuana in a farmer’s field. Norfolk OPP subsequently discovered a section of cornfield cleared, and used instead for illegal drug production.

Norfolk OPP removed approximately 172 plants from the area, with an estimated street value of $1,000 per, or $172,000 in total.

“Marihuana grows pose a real threat to both public and police safety and the OPP remains strongly committed to work within all of our communities across the province to stem the tide of illicit drugs,” said Norfolk Constable Ed Sanchuk.

A press release from Norfolk OPP warned of the hazards of approaching marihuana ‘grows’ include means of protection against ‘pot pirates’ including booby traps. OPP urge anyone finding a suspected ‘grow’ to leave the area immediately and call police.
