Mary Jane Barth clinched the 9-hole Ladies Club Championship at The Bridges at Tillsonburg on Sept. 1st with a two-day score of 95.
“Today (Monday) I shot 47, yesterday 48,” said Barth, who was if nothing else ‘consistent’ winning her first-ever 9-hole Club Championship.
“Well, sort of, I guess so,” she smiled, not so sure of the ‘consistent’ label.
“Yeah, I guess it was consistent. I would like to do a little better. Usually these tournaments tend to be a little… tense.
“It’s the pressure,” she admitted with a laugh. “It’s just in my head, knowing ‘okay, this is club championships…’”
She relaxed before rounds listening to music.
“I listen to Norah Jones on the way into town – on the iPod – and we live south of Eden. Very calm.”
There were four nine-hole ladies vying for the 2013 Verne’s Carpet One Trophy.
“The three girls I played with are just lovely. We had lots of fun – it was a fun day. Yesterday, too.”
An enjoyable tournament, said Barth, but also a poignant tournament, noting the loss of several club members in the past year.
“We’re really missing Joan Sinden this year. She and I did have a playoff one year, and she won it. So I was thinking of her this morning. She was just the greatest gal and we miss her terribly. She was a competitor, too, and she was the best putter.”
