SWA gears up for new swim season

South Western Aquatics’ new swimming season is just around the corner. Actually for returning SWA swimmers, it begins next week.

“September 6th we start with the dryland,” said SWA head coach Roman Ramirez, “and on September 10th we start swimming.”

South Western Aquatics is coming off a very successful 2012-13 season.

“A great season,” Ramirez smiled. “I was really proud of all my swimmers.

“Looking at the numbers at swimming meets we participated in the last year (2011-12) to this past year, it was almost double. We had more swimmers participating in all the swim meets.

“And the medals, we are talking about achieving goals. We had almost double the medals in all swimming meets, from fundamental swimming meets to the provincials and nationals.”

Ramirez is ready to continue building off that success in the 2013-14 season.

“I’m really excited for the next season,” he said.

“I hope – and expect – we are going to have more swimmers at Provincials. We had many swimmers really close to times for Provincials. This year… they are going to get it.”

For new swimmers, SWA offers ‘rookie camps’ to give competitive swimming a try.

In Tillsonburg, rookie camps are available on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Thursday, Sept. 19, both from 6-7 p.m. at the Kinsmen Pool in the Tillsonburg Community Centre.

For Woodstock area swimmers, rookie camps at the Southside Aquatic Centre are Sept. 16 and 18, also 6-7 p.m.

SWA has programs for all ages and abilities. Swimmers will improve their swimming endurance, swim stroke skills, and in some cases, prepare for competitions at Regionals, Provincial, and National levels.

See SWA’s website for more information.

“I would like to thank all the sponsors, the towns – Tillsonburg and Woodstock – for their support of the team,” said Ramirez.

“Also my board members, and the parents, and the swimmers,” he smiled, “for this great season we just had.”
