CAW Local 88 has strike mandate

Members of CAW Local 88, which represents hourly workers at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, have given their leadership a strike mandate.

“It's not (a vote) to go on strike, it's (a vote) to use the hammer if we need it,” said Mike Vanboekel CAMI plant chair with Local 88. “The goal is still to get a ratified agreement by September 15.”

The union membership voted 98.6% in favour of a strike mandate when ballots were cast at the Progress Building in London on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013.

After three weeks of negotiations in March of this year, Vanboekel said the union has been talking “of and on” with the company and another week-long session is scheduled for September.

While he couldn't divulge specifics, Vanboekel said the union is making responsible and reasonable demands after concessions that have been made in the past.

“I'm confident we can get a deal (in place),” he said.
