An interesting few weeks

Article content

It’s been an interesting few weeks.

Been busy with yard and house maintenance which is a never-ending job. With the mulberries cut out and some lower branches removed from the cedars there is a lot to do underneath to eliminate growth that has hidden for years. My hand is still sore but I am able to do some weeding and such to at least begin the process.

After five years, it was time to visit my ophthalmologist. Been having trouble seeing the score of the hockey games, tennis matches and ball games and things seemed fuzzy from time to time. My fear was cataracts. After a thorough examination with all the latest equipment the doctor told me the problem was my glasses were too strong – my eyes had improved. Age has some benefits. He joked that if I lived long enough I wouldn’t have to wear glasses at all.

I still had to buy new glasses now and, as anyone who wears them knows, it is not an inexpensive experience. If I get five years out of these I guess it’s worth it.

Finding glasses for me is not an easy feat. First, I have a big head and for years had to wear men’s frames but now they are making more stylish ones for the well endowed. Secondly, I have long eyelashes so have to wear them lower on the bridge of my nose, which is uncomfortable. I was so excited to find a pair I could actually wear that doesn’t interfere with my eyelashes. When I complained about my lashes scrubbing, the technician remarked, “And you want me to feel sorry for you?”

I suppose it’s like everything else - you want what others have. Girls with straight hair wish for curly while those with curls hate it. Short girls want to be tall and visa versa. While some women get implants, many women with large chests would gladly exchange them – well, you get the idea.

In the midst of all this my ears plugged up. This happens from time to time and no one seems to know why. It’s a simple procedure at the doctor’s office – a nurse just flushes out the gobs of debris. Don’t even need to see the doctor so I am not taking valuable time away from people who need it.

This time I did have some “redness” so the doctor stepped in, took a quick look, diagnosed some dysfunction (yeah, like I needed any more of those) and prescribed a pill and a nasal spray.

I don’t know about you but I was expecting drops for my ears. Anyway, I picked up the prescription along with some eye droppers and mineral oil the nurse advised I use occasionally. I asked the pharmacist about side effects and she said there would not be any serious side effects but the spray might cause sneezing.

I didn’t tell her there will come a time in her life when she realizes sneezing can be a “serious” side effect.
