Saying good-bye to Fatima

Article content

Ezri Chernak - Our Lady of Fatima School

When I first came to Fatima in Grade 7, it was a huge change from my quiet home-schooled experience.

I was thrown into a completely new environment, full of noise and activity. That’s why I was so glad that the staff and students of Our Lady of Fatima were both kind and welcoming to me, the newcomer.

Since then I’ve gotten to know so many people at this small school with a big heart and we’ve shared some great times together. Now that it’s time to say good-bye to Fatima, all of the Grade 8s in the graduating class will be sad to leave.

As the year’s end started to loom in the near future, I decided that I definitely wanted to include some of the best moments of the school year in my last article. So I asked the Grade 8s what their best time was and almost all of them gave me the same answer: Ottawa.

The three day trip we took to Ottawa was, I agree, an amazing time. As well as being the subject of one of my previous articles we can now say it was the whole class’s favorite memory of Fatima.

Though it is nice to look back at the great times we’ve had, at this point, it’s also important to look forward. I already knew some my friend’s ambitions for the future and which high school they would be going to, but I wanted to get the full picture. Again, I’m glad I asked them.

From finding a cure to cancer to achieving world domination, my classmates’ ambitions soared. Some more down to earth students wanted to be teachers, tradesmen, or accountants, though. I personally don’t know what I want to do yet. Maybe something to do with writing…

As for which high school everyone’s going to, sadly many of us are going separate ways: Maddy, Judy, Corey, Matthew, Mckenna, Jamie, and I are going to Holy Trinity; the twins, James and Jeremy, are going to East Elgin; Anthony and Bryce are going to DDSS; and Ashley is going to Glendale. It will be hard for many of us not to see each other at school any more.

Even though our class is splitting up and we won’t be seeing most of the other students and staff at Fatima regularly, I still hope to keep in touch with some of the wonderful people I’ve met at Fatima. One thing is for certain: our time at Our Lady of Fatima has changed all of us and I will never forget it.

This is Ezri Chernak signing off, for the last time, from the small school with the big heart.
