Red Sox host tourney

Despite some adverse weather, the Tillsonburg Red Sox got their three-day tournament in on the weekend.

And that, despite two losses for the host team, was a major win.

“They (Milton) are a good hitting team,” said Red Sox Tyler Lamb, recalling a 14-3 decision Friday night at Sam Lamb Field.

“Our guy (Shawn Watt) threw well, but they hit the ball. We didn’t hit it much.”

Milton put four across in the first inning, four in the third, and finished if in the fifth adding five more.

Tillsonburg recorded its three runs in the fifth – Brett Ferguson singled and scored, and back at the top of the order Adam Thomson and Ben Rempel (walk) worked around the bases.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys. It’ll take a few games to get to know each other. Better than last year, player-wise.”

On Saturday, Tillsonburg was edged 2-1 by Bolton.

“A good, close game,” said Lamb, noting they were missing a couple key players on the weekend.

Tillsonburg took a 1-0 lead in the second with lead batter Brendan DeClark singling, Jamie Davis bunting him over, and Trevor Oakes cashing him in with a single.

Bolton replied with one in the fourth, then went up 2-1 in the fifth.

The Red Sox didn’t get another hit until Jamie Davis belted a two-out double in the top of the seventh.

“We just couldn’t get that single,” said Lamb. “We just didn’t get hits when we needed them, pretty much. But those will come, just need more at-bats.”

With 20 on the Red Sox roster, they have ample bodies. And they need them, said Lamb, with work commitments playing in the Southwestern Senior League, which includes Lakeside, Ilderton, Exeter, Strathroy and the London Bulls.

“Some pretty good teams – high calibre competition,” said Lamb.

“I’m focusing on OBA’s.”
