Frost warning issued

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of Ontario including Norfolk and Oxford Counties.

Unseasonably cool temperatures dominated Southern Ontario Sunday, and were forecast to linger through Monday evening.

Seasonal temperatures are forecast to return midweek. Forecasters are calling for daytime highs of 20 or greater from Wednesday onward.

But the interim may prove problematic for area agricultural producers. Sunday proved cool and temperatures close to the freezing mark were predicted overnight and into the early morning for both that and Monday evenings.

Sunday’s persistent breeze was seen as a factor in lowering the risk of frost that night, but a potential lessening of wind Monday evening and overnight will increase the frost risk.

“A high pressure ridge bringing clear skies and light winds will result in a much better potential for frost Monday night and early Tuesday morning,” said the statement.

Last spring, the combination of unseasonably warm weather early in the season that boosted growth, followed by a killing frost was broadly unwelcome and proved catastrophic for area apple producers who harvested only a tiny fraction of their regular crop.
