Horticultural Society auction Tuesday

The Tillsonburg Horticultural Society is holding its 7th Annual Garden Auction on Tuesday, May 14 in the Lions Auditorium at the Tillsonburg Community Centre.

“A lot of horticultural societies have plant sales but we decided to do an auction and get all the businesses in the surrounding areas involved as well,” said Jan Torrell, president of the Tillsonburg Horticultural Society. “This is our main fundraiser.”

The money raised from the auction is used by the horticultural society to plant flowers at locations around Tillsonburg, such as Woodingford Lodge, the Seniors Centre, Annandale House, the Soccer Club and the Livingston Centre, in an effort to beautify the town every summer. On average the annual garden auction raises approximately $4,500.

Torrell said visitors to the auction can expect to see additional features including bargain tables, draw tables with non-garden related items, a bake sale and garden books for sale.

“All of the volunteers will be wearing lovely green aprons with the horticultural society’s emblem of the forget-me-not on it,” she said. “So they can come up and ask anyone of us anything about all the plants as they walk through.”

There will be a wide variety of plants and flowers for sale through both the live auction and at the tables set up in the Lions Auditorium.

“This year we have a lot of herbs that we didn’t have last year,” added Torrell. “Such lovely ones as borage and lovage, we have cilantro, parsley and basil - these are mostly the annual herbs that you have to buy every year. There may also be a little bit of oregano or a little bit of sage and some chives, but those are the perennial ones.”

There will be tomato plants for sale at the 7th annual garden auction, however not the heirloom variety that were sold last year and there will be a few trees for sale as well.

Torrell noted that the annual event by the Tillsonburg Horticultural Society is a great way for people of all ages or those interested, to learn about gardening, plants and about the horticultural society itself.

“Come on out. The plants that we have are guaranteed - most of them are out of our own gardens so they will grow here,” said Torrell. “If you want to experiment with something new, get a bargain or ask questions - it’s a great place to come.”

The Tillsonburg Horticultural Society’s annual garden auction is expected to last about two hours and will wrap up around 8:30 p.m. Doors to the Lions Auditorium will open at 5:45 p.m., with the live auction beginning at 6:30 p.m.
