High school students are required to complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate at the end of their four years, however Grade 11 student Lyndi-Colleen Morgan has already completed more than eight times the required amount.

With more than 330 hours of community service under her belt, the 16-year-old Delhi District Secondary School student has been named Junior Citizen of the Year by the Delhi and District Chamber of Commerce. She is one of two students to receive the award this year.

“I was like, is this some kind of joke?” she recalled thinking when she was told of her award. “I was really shocked. I still am.”

Morgan has been volunteering for as long as she can remember and for a variety of organizations.

At school, she assists with the Junior Awards commencement, helps at the annual Grade 8 night and helped raise money for Relay for Life.

She has assisted with the Delhi Harvestfest Dead End Street Rodders car show, the Delhi Santa Claus parade and events at the Royal Canadian Legion in Delhi.

“I do the things that not everyone wants to do,” she said, like washing dishes and clearing tables. “I enjoy that.”

She can be found doing these duties at the Windham Lions' steak dinners in Teeterville or events at Delhi United Church as well as during fundraiser barbecues for the Delhi Laugh and Learn Daycare Centre and Delhi Travellers.

“I like being behind the scenes,” she said.

Morgan is also a junior leader with the local Girl Guides unit and volunteers at the Sunday School at Delhi United Church.

“One of my favourite things to do is the Sunday School at the church. There are new kids every week and you get to learn about them and their families,” she said.

She credits her family for passing along the love of volunteering.

“When they were young, they had to come along,” said her father, Dana, but now it is something she enjoys. “She does a lot.”
