Adopt-a-planter program returns

Delhi's gardeners are encouraged to bring their talents to the downtown core.
The Delhi and District Horticultural Society's annual adopt-a-planter program is now underway and there are nine planters in need of a gardener.
Every year the 55 planters that line the sidewalks downtown are tended to by local gardeners. They are judged throughout the summer and again at the end of the season with prizes awarded to the top six planters.
Prizes range from $10 to $200.
The prizes act as an incentive, said adopt-a-planter chair Donna Hussey.
“It just encourages people to participate,” she said. “It's not cheap to put plants in, so it's nice to have the prize money.”
Prizes are also awarded in a junior category.
Planters are judged on their attractiveness, uniqueness and maintenance. Some years people have got quite creative with their planters adding decorations, as well as the usual flora, however these displays have often been targeted by vandalism, said Hussy.
Registration forms can be found at Delhi Flowers on Main Street. Anyone who registers to care for a planter will receive a 10% off coupon for the Delhi Canadian Tire garden centre for the purchase of their plants.
Registration will remain open until July 20 or until all of the planters have been adopted.
