Spirited bidding at auction fundraiser

Article content

Curlers wrapped up their 2012-13 season on a high note April 6th and there was no curling involved!! With the Tillsonburg and District Curling Club packed to standing room only capacity, Ewart McLaughlin and his lovely assistants, Vanna I and II, managed to coax big bucks from everyone’s pockets to net the club over $10,000 in their season ending fundraiser auction.

There was a real party atmosphere in the club, and with almost 80 people registering to bid some fairly high spirited and competitive bidding went on especially when some of the golfing/dinner packages or fishing/boating items were on the block.

The Senior Men’s Group operating in the club started things off with a donation of $400 presented to the club by representative Tony Desmond. Ewart, with his great sense of humour, cajoled or persuaded people into getting the bidding started and then moved the pace along quickly as there were more than 60 items that needed to be sold.

The success of the auction was very dependent on club members’ support and with the wonderful result we have, it shows how well supported the event was by curlers, sponsors, local businesses and friends of curlers. It really demonstrates the new spirit of the club!

The planned renovations for the club should move forward easily with the amount raised along with some of the necessities needed to continue to operate the club.

I also can’t let the year end without a comment on the Ford World Men’s Championships. Other than Team Canada and their final silver medal accomplishment, you know what stands out in my mind about those championships? Hair! From the waist-length dreadlocks of the Finn… to the orange do of the Japanese… to the spikes of Swedish Edin… and then the facial hair of the Canadians! Definitely a whole new look to the game! I do like Thomas in those pants though!

You can get one last look at 30 of the best teams in the game this week on Sportsnet as they end their major events with the final Grand Slam Players Championship coming from the Mattamy Centre (the old Maple Leaf Gardens) in TO this weekend. Better yet, head down for some games this week and cheer on Team Mark Kean with Travis Fanset at vice. This event is one which earns points toward Olympic Trials so teams will want to be at their best.

Team Kean is currently ranked 9th and working hard to earn their way into the Trials, Roar of the Rings, or at least the Road to the Roar.

Well that’s a wrap for this year, please continue to show your interest in your club by attending the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 29th at 7 p.m. Give your opinion, make decisions and find out what the Board has in store for next season. Better yet let your name stand for the Board of Directors and offer your input on a regular basis.

The Board will continue to meet over the summer to plan for the 2013-14 season.

Thanks to everyone for a great year, watch for the final newsletter coming out before the Annual meeting. Stay safe and have a good ‘off’ season. Curlers rock!
