DeGroote-Hill U12s win Regional ringette gold medals

Tillsonburg DeGroote-Hill U12 Twisters rolled into Fergus on Friday, March 22 for the first game of the Western Region Ringette Regionals.

First up for the Twisters was Waterloo, who placed second at a Niagara Falls tournament. The DeGroote-Hill U12s shut down Waterloo’s offence holding them to a total of five shots in a 9-4 victory.

Playing in the U12 Blue Division, the Twisters knew they had to go undefeated – and have the best plus-minus record – to get to the gold medal game.

“As a team, we surely had no problems scoring goals all year,” said DeGroote-Hill U12 coach Mike Parsons. “But in this case, we needed to step up as a team to defend our goal.”

Tillsonburg’s defence held tough against Elora Fergus, also on the 22nd, limiting Elora to only three shots in a 9-2 win.

Saturday morning, Tillsonburg’s defence was air-tight against Owen Sound. The Twisters improved to 3-0 with a 7-0 shutout, limiting Owen Sound to just one shot on net.

One win away from the gold medal game, Tillsonburg faced Exeter.

“The chanting on the bench fired everyone up and they brought it to the ice,” said coach Parsons. “Another incredible effort by the team gave us a second consecutive shutout.”

A 6-0 win clinched first place for the DeGroote-Hill Twisters, setting up a rematch with Exeter in Sunday’s gold medal game.

“The girls poured it on,” said Parsons. “They really wanted and deserved this victory as they worked hard all year to reach this point.”

With a 5-2 lead, the crowd counted down the last 10 seconds and the Twisters celebrated winning U12 Blue Division gold medals.

“What a wonderful way to end our year. We are all so proud of the effort put forth by every girl on the team. Congratulations!”

Parsons thanked all the families, coaches, parents, fans, grandparents and the team’s sponsor – DeGroote-Hill Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd – for a ‘terrific’ ringette season.
