Award winning artist, Randy Wilson of Waterford will be returning to Tillsonburg to showcase his work as part of the Changing Exhibit Gallery at the Station Arts Centre, from April 5-30, 2013.

Focusing on wildlife, landscapes and rural scenes over the years, Wilson has developed his style and honed his talent in an award-winning career that has spanned over two decades.

“I started painting seriously in 1985,” said Wilson. “My style has gone from being realistic to becoming more impressionist.”

Using a mix of acrylics and water-based oil paints in his work, Wilson noted that the impressionist style of painting gives him more freedom to express his creativity.

“I wanted to try something a little bit different, so I find impressionist style painting is a little looser, a little more artsy than the high realism,” he said. “Before I’d be putting almost every hair on an animal, but now I don’t go into that much detail, but it still looks like it’s there.”

It is his unique style and appreciation for nature and wildlife that has won Wilson numerous awards throughout the years. Most notably, with Ducks Unlimited Canada as Artist of the Year

“It validates what you do,” said Wilson. “It was a nice award to win.”

Wilson presented his first exhibit at the Station Arts Centre several years ago in September 2001 and will be showcasing a variety of works in his second exhibit in April.

“It’s going to be a mix of the two styles – I have some older pieces that are going to be shown and there are going to be some newer pieces,” he added noting that this time around, he hopes to share his passion for nature and wildlife with the residents of Tillsonburg. “I guess I do paintings because there’s something about a scene or a particular bird or animal that strikes me as being worthy of depicting it that way,” explained Wilson.

“There are so many neat things around us that we often overlook them all – even the smallest little thing. You could be driving by a ditch and see the snowdrifts and think that’s pretty sharp.

“Quite often I’ll find something or I’ll see scenery that I pass on a fairly regular basis and then one day it just kind of hits you – there it is,” he said of the inspiration behind his artwork.

Wilson has sold paintings across North America and Europe, and after some time away from painting, he looks forward to returning to Tillsonburg and showcasing his artwork once again.

“I have always tried to create the best pieces of art that I possibly can,” said Wilson. “I am looking forward to creating new and exciting works.”
