Three children treated, released

Elgin OPP continue to investigate a collision involving a van and a bicycle pulling a child carrier trailer which occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. Monday, March 25 evening along Chapel St., Vienna in Bayham Township.

At the time of the collision, a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan Mini-Van was reversing from a private lane and onto Chapel Street. The bicycle towing the child carrier trailer was travelling west downhill on Chapel Street. The bicycle struck the van on the driver's side in the area of the driver's door and sliding passenger door. The operator of the bicycle was thrown off, striking the driver side front door window breaking it, while the trailer struck the driver’s side rear sliding-door area.

EMS transported three children, five-year-old male Ezra Blatz, four-year-old female Megan Blatz and one-year-old male Trevor Blatz to Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital in Tillsonburg, for initial assessment.

They were then airlifted via air ambulance to London Health Sciences Centre - Victoria Campus - for treatment. They were later released having suffered only minor injuries.

The father of the children and operator of the bicycle, 30-year-old Daniel Blatz, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the van, a 21-year-old Malahide Township woman was not injured in the collision.

Police investigation has determined that none of the parties were wearing bicycle helmets and the three children were not strapped into trailer.

The investigation is continuing.
