Diane Bakos has been described as the heart of the Laugh and Learn Daycare Centre in Delhi.

She started as a cook at the centre when it opened in 1990 after her own children started school.

Everyday she prepares healthy snacks for the little ones who receive care at the centre until they are school-aged. She also quietly tends to the administrative work while the sounds of children playing echo through the office walls.

“Families have come to associate her with the centre and it is her kind and generous spirit that has maintained the excellence of care in our community for decades,” said Jenn Van De Velde, president of the centre's board.

“She has always been the centre of the centre,” said Van De Velde. “You can't help but trust and like her.”

The centre has undergone a series of renovations and programming changes to accommodate toddlers. As a result, Bakos has taken on a greater level of administrative duties.

“She has gone far above and beyond to keep the centre functioning well, all the while maintaining her pleasant and approachable nature. She genuinely cares about the centre and the families it serves and is a true testament to a giving member of our community,” said Van De Velde.

However, the always humble Bakos said there are many other equally deserving individuals at the centre.

“There have been many other wonderful people and more hands on with the children,” she said. “I really have had some wonderful opportunities to work with some wonderful parents.”

“You can't help but be involved with everyone you meet here because it is so small and community oriented,” she said. “It's a great little centre.”
