Atoms proud to represent Tillsonburg

Tillsonburg Johnson Controls atom house league hockey team made it all the way to the finals of the Frank Dymock Classic House League tournament in Wallaceburg.

“A great tournament for team spirit and comradeship, we represented Tillsonburg with pride,” said Johnson Controls atom coach Chuck Collins. “Lots of swimming and ministicks were enjoyed by all the kids.”

Tillsonburg 6, Wallaceburg-1 0

Johnson Controls opened the tournament on Friday, Feb. 15 shutting out Wallaceburg-1 6-0.

Hat tricks were scored by Curtis Fortune and Marshal Baker.

“Curtis had his slapshot dialed in and received the "golden jersey,’” said coach Collins.

Tillsonburg 4, Wallaceburg-2 3

“Good back and forth action,” said Collins, describing the second Saturday game (noon). “A well-fought game by whole the team and a stellar performance from goaltender Kyle Loucks.”

Tillsonburg 10, Ingersoll 1

Tillsonburg romped to a 10-1 win over Ingersoll in the 4 p.m. game. Another outstanding effort from Marshal Baker earned Baker the ‘golden jersey.’

Wallaceburg-3 4, Tillsonburg 0

A long day came to an end with a 4-0 loss.

“We gave it our best shot,” said Collins, recalling a major snowstorm that moved through the region.

Second in their pool, Johnson Controls doubled Wallaceburg-3 6-3 in Sunday’s semifinal. A great effort from Logan Ladell, said Collins.

Wallaceburg-1 defeated Tillsonburg 5-1 in Sunday’s championship final.

“It was close through two periods,” said coach Collins, impressed by the team’s never-give-up attitude and hard work.

Tillsonburg Johnson Controls’ coaches thanked the parents for their cheering as the players came out of the dressing room after the championship loss.

“I am very proud of the kids, the team has made great progress and friends,” said Collins.

Since the Frank Dymock Memorial Tournament, the LL1 atoms have tied Delhi-2 5-4, beat Delhi-1 6-4, lost 2-0 (Delhi-2) and 7-5 (Simcoe-2) in Southern Counties playoffs. Johnson Controls also won its last two games, 5-4 and 3-2 against Simcoe-1, but fell short of the Southern Counties semifinals by one point.

Still to come is the TMHI Max Partlo Memorial House League Tournament, March 22-24.
