J/E Bearing awarded $4.35 million subcontract

Tillsonburg’s J/E Bearing and Machine Ltd. has been awarded a $4.35 million subcontract by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada, in support of the Canadian Army’s Light Armoured Vehicle III upgrade project.

“This announcement demonstrates our continued support of our brave men and women in uniform and skilled Canadian workers, including right here in Tillsonburg,” said Oxford MP Dave MacKenzie, on hand recently at J/E to make the announcement.

“Our investments today will provide our troops with the modern equipment they need to conduct their missions safely and effectively for many decades to come.”

The Light Armoured Vehicle III Upgrade Project, one of four Family of Land Combat Vehicle projects announced by the Government of Canada, will capitalize on existing and evolving technology to improve the protection, mobility and lethality of the Canada’s Light Armoured Vehicle III fleet. The project will modernize a portion of the existing fleet to ensure it remains the backbone of domestic and expeditionary task forces, extending the life span of the vehicle to 2035.

The J/E subcontract is a result of a $1.064 billion Government of Canada contract awarded to General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in October, 2011 for the delivery of 550 upgraded Light Armoured Vehicles.

The Government of Canada’s agreement with General Dynamics Land Systems Canada commits the company to re-invest 100% of the contract value in business activities in the Canadian economy, further expanding the economic benefits of this procurement in regions across the country.

“Our government is leveraging large-scale investments and positioning Canadian industry to take advantage of not only current but emerging value chains,” said the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry.

J/E Bearing and Machine will be providing General Dynamic Land Systems Canada with bearing assemblies that are critical components in the upgraded Light Armoured Vehicle III driveline. These high-quality components will contribute to the mobility of the vehicle, helping Canadian soldiers prosecute mission objectives.

“Our relationship with GDLS Canada has been incredible positive experience for our company,” said J/E Vice President Chuck Hendricks. “Not only from an opportunity standpoint but just as important, from a supplier development standpoint. Working together has made J/E a better company, including quality standards, and systemic operations.

“Programs like this one from governments and opportunities from GDLS provides exciting, level playing fields for our company to participate. We are truly honoured and appreciative to earn their trust, to be part of the GDLS and Canadian military supply chain.”

The overall investment is designed to renew Canadian Armed Forces capabilities, building a first-class military capable of 21st century challenges, while also supporting Canadian workers across the country.

“Canadian soldiers need the best tools for the job, and deserve the best vehicle we can give them”, said Danny Deep, vice president of General Dynamics Land Systems Canada. “The Lav III Upgrade Project will enhance the LAV III fleet’s survivability, operational capability and long term performance.

“With our Canadian design and manufacturing base and over 500 suppliers located in every province of Canada, we are proud to say that the best armoured vehicles in the world are made in Canada.”
