Resident leads campaign to install racks downtown

Cyclists in Delhi will soon have a place to secure their bicycles in the downtown core.

Dana Morgan, a Delhi resident, is leading a campaign to purchase about 15 bike racks to be located around the town at popular destinations for those riding their bicycles in the summer months. The campaign is being backed by the Delhi BIA.

“There is a need for it,” said Morgan.

He noted during the summer the streets are littered with bicycles belonging to those visiting stores and restaurants in town or making a pit stop while riding the nearby trails.

Unfortunately, without a place to lock a bike, it is easily accessible to possible thieves.

“The only place to put a bike (currently) is to chain it to a fence or a tree or a pole,” said Morgan.

The bike racks will cost about $270 each.

Morgan is looking for individuals or businesses to donate funds to the project.

To encourage donations, residents can purchase a bike rack in memory of a loved one. There is an advertising plate located on the rack, however there will be an additional cost to have a sign added to the rack.

In May, Morgan and his family will go on a 40-kilometre bike ride to help raise money through sponsors.

“This is our family's way of saying thank you to Delhi,” said Morgan. “We just want to do something for the town.”

Anyone who would like to make a donation or would like more information about the project can contact Dana Morgan at 519-582-1083 or dpm5@sympatico.ca
