A goat, four ducks and vaccinations

A Grade 6 class at Maple Lane Public School has raised money to help the less fortunate in Africa.
Alicia Doan, the students' teacher, says she was very impressed with her class’s decision to raise money to help out people in Africa.
The class conjured the idea completely on their own, after being influenced by their social studies class, in which they learned about developing countries,” said Doan. “In their Literacy class, they learned about the rights and freedoms, and that a lot of countries don’t have the essential everyday needs such as clean water, medical services and food.
“They felt that it was their job to make a difference.”
The class made a goal to raise $50 by the end of the week, starting on February 4th. They would use their own change, from allowance, piggy banks and leftovers from buying lunch instead of going door-to-door selling products. So, it came as a huge surprise to Doan when her students raised $142 in five days.
The class also considered donating the money to the less fortunate in the U.S., but decided that it would be more worthwhile to help those in Africa.
“That was even more impressive.”
The students, along with their teacher, did some research on what they could do with the money.
“We could buy something like a goat that would give the family milk to drink, and they could sell the milk,” says Doan.
The money that the class raised allowed them to buy one goat, four ducks and $104 in vaccinations.
The student’s mature decision – and proactive action - to aid those in desperate need of help, has left many inspired by their huge hearts.
