Tillsonburg digging out

Tillsonburg and area residents continue to dig out from under the latest winter storm.

But on area highways, it appears motorists are driving to conditions, and less ‘big’ news is good news.

“It sure is,” agreed Constable Lisa Narancsik of the Oxford County OPP Wednesday morning just prior to 11 a.m.

Although early in the driving day, Narancsik said reports she had received to that point were largely of vehicles in the ditch in a variety of areas of the county, without significant injuries resulting.

“Nothing specific has come my way yet, so that’s a good thing.”

Considering accident activity over the past few weeks, no ‘big’ news is indeed good news, she reiterated.

Narancsik theorized the recent 50-car pileup on the 401 may have ‘put a scare,’ into some people. One frustrating aspect of that massive incident, the constable said, was that during cleanup, officers observed motorists in the opposing fast lane sticking their arms out of their windows to take cell phone photos while driving past – the kind of distracted driving behaviour which can contribute significantly to accidents.

“That kind of stuff is still going in,” she said.

As the day progresses, Narancsik encouraged motorists to continue to drive to conditions, and pay full attention to the road, which preliminary indications suggest they are.

“People have appeared to slowed down a bit,” she credited. “And it’s probably saving them some headaches.”
