Tillsonburg Horizon Seeds atom reps got hat tricks from Matthew Fabi and Josiah VanGurp Sunday in a 6-2 Southern Counties minor hockey playoff win over Cayuga at the Kinsmen Memorial Arena.
“We were a little light today, we had two guys away,” said Horizon Seeds atom coach Ron VanDoninck. “So we had defencemen playing forward – they all chipped in. A good effort from everybody in a tough game.”
Both Fabi and VanGurp scored their second goals by crashing the Cayuga net.
“I shot it and someone pushed me into the post,” said Fabi.
“I crashed to the net for my second one, too,” said VanGurp, who got knocked over the goalie on the play. “The puck went in first.”
After a scoreless first period, Tillsonburg struck twice, but so did Cayuga – 15 seconds apart late in the second – to equalize at 2-2.
The Tornadoes re-grouped and dominated scoring the rest of the way with four unanswered goals.
“We kind of got revved up,” said VanGurp, noting their talk at the bench between periods.
“Got pumped up,” Fabi nodded.
Tillsonburg came into the SC playoff game as favorites, but not by a lot.
“They’re just under .500 and we’re just over .500,” said VanGurp.
“So they (Cayuga) are not so strong,” said Fabi, who scored his first goal off a rebound and third on a tipped point shot.
“All my three goals were just rebounds,” said VanGurp. “Just went to the net and then I got the puck. But most of my goals this year were just shooting.”
“Most of my goals were deking,” said Fabi. “I have like a special thing I do – I cut in front of the net, fake one way and cut the other way.”
