Shed to be auctioned off at home show

Students at Delhi District Secondary School picked up their hammer and nails to build something that will in turn help other youth.

A small garden shed, built with materials donated by the Delhi Home Building Centre and constructed by Grade 11 DDSS woodworking students, will be auctioned off during the Haldimand-Norfolk Home Builder's Association Home Show at the Aud in Simcoe Feb. 22 to Feb. 24. Proceeds from the silent auction will go to the Spot Youth Centre in Simcoe.

“We figured they are always hurting for money...and it's a nice way for the kids to help other kids,” said Harvey Van Der Meer, head of the technology department at DDSS.

Van Der Meer has made it a habit to have his students make pieces in class for a good cause. They have made bunk bends to donate to an orphanage in Tanzania, bird boxes for the Alternative Land Use Services program and build custom cabinets and gazebos for customers on a regular basis.

“It fits with our basic philosophy – mine anyway — that there is more to life than yourself,” said Van Der Meer.

The students don't seem to mind working on these types of projects either.

“They are a hardworking bunch of kids,” he said. “They'll work here all day if they had the option.”
