Things slowed down a bit at the curling club as we slipped into February as we’ve only had one bonspiel so far this month - the Men’s Tier 55 last Friday.

Things will amp up next week with the Tillsonburg Ladies 36th Annual Bronze Broom Bonspiel running Monday and Tuesday and then right on its heels the Good Redden Klosler Community Service Bonspiel which has been held annually since 1958!

The Bronze Broom has a full slate of 16 teams curling in the two-day event. Three teams will represent the club and many club volunteers will be involved to make the spiel a success. Our four trophy sponsors for the event are Stauffer Motors, Howard Johnson, Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire.

The Community Service Bonspiel happens Wednesday, Feb. 27 beginning at 2 p.m. This is a fun bonspiel aimed at bringing community service groups together for friendly rivalry in a bonspiel where they can network with each other, plus possibly earn as much as $500 towards the charity, group or local project of their choice. This yearly event is jointly sponsored by the curling club and by Good Redden Klosler and is truly a community get-together.

Bonspiel chairman, Chris Appleton tells me the two draws are almost full, he is waiting for one entry on the late draw to fill it and on the early draw he needs two more teams to be full. If you’d like to get involved there is still time to do so by contacting Chris at 519-842-4246. Volunteers are also needed for the kitchen that day so members please sign in. Members of the public are welcome to come and watch the curling as well.

Several teams have been out on the Bonspiel Trail. From the men’s section, Walt Kleer along with Les Peter, Randy DeClercq and Gerald Sandham headed to Plattsville last week where they won their three games. The boys brought home the ‘bacon’ – well for Les it was salami – coming second overall in the spiel.

Two ladies teams travelled to Sarnia for their three-day spiel. Wendy Young and her team of Shirley Ireland, Marian Muth and Isabel Brown were still curling on the third day, but in Wendy’s words “not well,” though they did finish in prizes. Tina VanderWallen-Howey with Yonna DiLella, Diane Burgess and Sandy Buchner did some cross-border shopping that 3rd day.

Another ladies team went out to a Tavistock bonspiel, Linda Newman with Yonna DiLella, Sandy Buchner and Heather Benton came home winners of the bonspiel and they brought home some of that famous Tavistock cheese with their salami!!

The Mixed league finished their “mixed-up” draw with the team of Randy DeClercq, Yonna DiLella, Terry Mattan and Pamela Simmons taking top honours with four straight wins. In this draw all the team were made up by mixing everyone up so that no one played with their spouse or partners - it led to some friendly rivalry when spouses faced each other in opposition, but certainly contributed to a loud social time after the games!

Two fundraisers are in progress at the club. Buy a square is up in the bar, so get your square for $10. The auction plans are well underway with some items already on our list, but we will need a lot more if we are going to reach our goal of $5,000. Letters are out to club members and the item forms are available so please be sure to get your item description handed in so we can add it to our list and watch that list grow until Auction Night, April 6.

Last but not least we are into Scotties Tournament of Hearts week so TSN has coverage all week. I have to say I’m cheering on our Ontario team (Rachel Holman) who as I write this are tied for first at 4-0 with Team Canada (Nedohin) and Team Manitoba (Jones). Rachel Holman and her team are on a winning streak which I hope will continue for them. Go Ontario, you rock!
