Girl Guides in need of leaders

The Girl Guides program in Delhi is thriving but is in need of leaders.

Some of the programs such as Rangers had to be cancelled due to the lack of adults willing to participate.

Leaders don't have to have children in the program in order to become involved, said Wanda Jacobs, leader of the 3rd Delhi Guide Unit.

“Anyone who is interested in helping, showing and guiding girls in our community – that's what we need,” she said.

Jacobs doesn't have any daughters in Guides and was never in Guides herself.

“Being a part of watching young girls build their self-esteem and being part of building that confidence . . . is something I enjoy,” she said.

The 3rd Delhi Guide Unit meets Wednesdays in the Norfolk Soccer Clubhouse. The 1st Delhi Pathfinders meet on Wednesdays in the cafeteria at Delhi District Secondary School.

Guides meet weekly to learn crafts, go on camp outs, hikes, sleepovers and more. Most importantly it gives the girls an opportunity to have fun, become independent and learn how to respect others.

“It's empowering women,” said Georgia Nix, 11, a third-year Guide. “It's just fun to come here.”

The girls build lasting friendships as they learn about being outside.

Jessica Shrubb, 15, is a junior leader with the 3rd Delhi Guide Unit because they weren't able to host a Rangers unit due to limited numbers. She said she is learning just as much or more while being a leader.

“I like teaching the girls new skills in life and getting to meet and become friends with someone I may not have ever met,” she said. “I'm learning a lot more about leadership skills.”

Both girls said they enjoy the inclusive spirit they feel in the all-girls environment at Guides.

“You feel more comfortable,” said Nix.

“You're not being judged,” added Shrubb.
