Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday

Article content

The middle of February is an active time at Monsignor O’Neil Catholic School.

Last week, our Grade 5 students participated in Dairy Days at the Woodstock Fairgrounds. Monsignor O'Neil Catholic School's Grade 5 students took a special trip to Woodstock to participate in the annual Dairy Days event. Students were briefed beforehand, and they saw tractors, petted a real cow, and ‘milked’ a plastic one!

On February 12, it was Shrove Tuesday, and staff and students at our school ate pancakes for morning snack as part of the Catholic tradition. Being Catholic means that, on Shrove Tuesday, we eat pancakes to prepare for Lent, when we’re meant to fast and give up things that we like as a reflection of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. For example, as a school, we’ll be giving up meat on our pizzas on pizza days during Lent.

Then, on Wednesday the 13th it is Ash Wednesday. On Ash Wednesday our school gathers at St. Mary's Church and students get crosses of ashes on our foreheads to represent an outward sign of our sinfulness to mark the first day of Lent!

On February 14th it is Valentine’s Day so our Student Parliament came up with a spirit day for our school to participate in. Since its Valentine’s Day, the theme is red, white and/or pink day. We hope everyone shows their school spirit.
