Petrolia wins Game 3

Petrolia Squires needed a home-ice win Tuesday night to avoid a three-game deficit in their WOAA senior men’s hockey best-of-seven South Division playoff series against the Tillsonburg Thunder.
The Thunder had rolled to victory in the first two games in Tillsonburg, including a 6-3 win Sunday evening, with Game 3 (Tuesday) and Game 4 (Friday) to be played in Petrolia.
Petrolia got it done on home ice winning 5-3 Tuesday with an empty net goal.
After a scoreless first period, Nathan Peacock scored twice to give Tillsonburg a 2-0 second-period lead. But the Squires replied with a four-goal third period. The turning point was a Kyle Quinn short-handed goal with 12:31 remaining to give Petrolia a 4-3 lead. It proved to be the game winner.
Petrolia outshot Tillsonburg 46-32.
Game 4 is Friday at 8 p.m. The series continues Saturday night in Tillsonburg at 7:30 p.m.
In other South Division playoffs, Komoka Classics, the No. 1 seed, swept Thedford 4-0 and the Monkton Wildcats upset Clinton, ranked No. 2, 4-0 to set up a Komoka-Monkton semifinal that will begin Feb. 23.
Tavistock Royals lead their series against Milverton 3-1 with Game 5 played Wednesday, Feb. 16.
