Petrolia Squires needed a home-ice win Tuesday night to avoid a three-game deficit in their WOAA senior men’s hockey best-of-seven South Division playoff series against the Tillsonburg Thunder.

The Thunder had rolled to victory in the first two games in Tillsonburg, including a 6-3 win Sunday evening, with Game 3 (Tuesday) and Game 4 (Friday) to be played in Petrolia.

Petrolia got it done on home ice winning 5-3 Tuesday with an empty net goal.

After a scoreless first period, Nathan Peacock scored twice to give Tillsonburg a 2-0 second-period lead. But the Squires replied with a four-goal third period. The turning point was a Kyle Quinn short-handed goal with 12:31 remaining to give Petrolia a 4-3 lead. It proved to be the game winner.

Petrolia outshot Tillsonburg 46-32.

Game 4 is Friday at 8 p.m. The series continues Saturday night in Tillsonburg at 7:30 p.m.
