Oxford MP appointed deputy whip

Oxford MP Dave MacKenzie has had a few more duties piled onto his governmental plate.

On Friday, MacKenzie was appointed to the position of deputy government whip. The appointment was made by Prime Minister Harper in consultation with colleagues and advisors.

“I am thrilled to be entering this new challenge and contributing to the progress and positive results that our government will achieve this parliamentary session,” MacKenzie said in a press release.

It’s important for a deputy government whip to be able to liaise with members on both sides of the aisle and MacKenzie believes his success in that area played a role in his appointment.

“(The appointment was the result) of my ability to work with my caucus mates and opposition members,” he said.

In the new position, MacKenzie will be working with the office of the government whip and he’ll be assisting with the organization of daily and longer-term parliamentary operations for the government.

The duties of the new role forced MacKenzie to step down as the chair of the standing committee on justice and human rights, a move that he described as “bittersweet.”

He said that he was pleased with the work the committee accomplished under his direction and, though he was disappointed to have to give it up, he’s relishing the opportunity to work alongside the office of the government whip.

The increased workload will also have him in Ottawa for longer durations each week, MacKenzie said he tries to get back to Oxford County “every weekend,” but the duties of the deputy government whip might keep him in Ottawa longer each week.
