Christmas tree pickup January 28

Town council voted to renew Christmas tree pickup during its last open meeting.

Town staff will pick up Christmas trees on January 28. Trees must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Those who miss this day, can bring their tree to the Tillsonburg Transfer Station at 50 Newell Road. Operating under its winter schedule, the transfer station is open every other Wednesday starting on January 30 until February 27 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., as well as the Saturdays of February 2nd and 16th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The move comes in response to confusion over whether trees would be picked up by the town or not, as well as a sense of responsibility. Debate during last Monday’s open meeting produced minimal conflict over whether the town should provide the service, and the motion to reinstate the program, suspended last year, was passed.

Reasons presented for doing so included minimizing confusion, a low relative cost, and environmental concern.

Councillor Marty Klein mentioned that, according to a search on Google, 30% of families are using real trees this Christmas, up from around 25-26%. From that statistic, he calculated that based on 6,800 homes in Tillsonburg, as many as 2,000 people would need to dispose of real trees.

"In my judgment, the best way to carry out this service is the way we have been doing it for the last 40 years,” said Klein. “I'm concerned about the environment. It makes a lot more sense having one vehicle going to the transfer station than two thousand."

"Carbon footprint," interjected Deputy Mayor Mark Renaud, alluding to an ideal of environmentally-conscious action.

The motion to reinstate Christmas tree pickup passed via a majority, with Councillor Chris Rosehart dissenting.
