Event gives Grade 8 students, parents glimpse at DDSS

Parents and students crammed into the library at Delhi District Secondary School last week to receive important information about entering high school.

“We just want people to know what sorts of things we think our priorities are,” said DDSS principal Alison High.

High, along with vice-principal Rob Malcolm, went through the programs and activities the school offers, what is required to graduate and what facilities the school has.

“It's a big decision to make but we've got a lot to offer,” said High.

Last Tuesday's information night focused on information for parents, whereas the Grade 8 day held in November is an introduction to high school life for the students.

High said it is important that parents stay involved in the decision-making process, although they may want to back off and give their children independence as they transition into their teen years.

“The best way to help kids be successful is for all of the people in their lives to be there for them,” said High.

Her advice to students is to ask questions and make sure the school offers what the student is looking for.

“I think there are a lot of factors and I think it is different for each student,” said High.

Some students are weighing their options between several high schools. Mackenzie Featherstone, a Grade 8 student at Our Lady of LaSalette, is looking at DDSS, Simcoe Composite School as well as Holy Trinity in Simcoe.

“A big thing is sports, for me,” she said, as well as programing.

She attended the session with her father, Rob, although he said it is ultimately her decision.

“I'm just here for her to get as much information as possible to make an informed decision. I will be happy with where ever she chooses,” he said.

Brittney Harrison, a Grade 8 student at Delhi Public School, has already decided she will be attending DDSS in the fall.

“I live close and it has good courses – everything I need to graduate,” she said.

She was just hoping to have time to learn her way around the school, while her grandmother Ruth Pepper collected some information for Harrison's parents.

“There's a couple of courses I have questions about,” she said.

At the end of the information session, parents and students had an opportunity to tour the school and interact with teachers and current students.
