Students produce their own book

Delhi Public School is home to a group of published authors.

“This is huge,” said Lynn-Ann Nash-Dertinger, the teacher that coordinated the project at Delhi.

Students in the Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes recently produced a book called Holiday Magic with the Write to Give campaign created by the World Teacher Aid Foundation.

“Everybody wins in this,” said Nash-Dertinger.

The campaign is designed to empower students while the proceeds go to children in developing nations.

“This is a huge self-esteem booster,” said Nash-Dertinger. “First you build the confidence then you do the job.”

The students at Delhi helped write and illustrate the book using photographs of crafts they made in class.

“We made a craft then we wrote about it then they put it in the book,” explained Emily Cree, a Grade 4 student.

“The beauty of it is they are all contributing” said Nash-Dertinger.

Riley Coulter, a Grade 3 student, added, “Everyone took responsibility so everyone should feel like an author.”

Coulter said the project has inspired him to keep writing.

“I've already wrote my own story but it's only one page but I'm not going to get it published,” he said.

Cree said she was excited to share the project. Her parents haven't seen the book yet but, “They thought the crafts were pretty cool.”

The books are $15 each and the proceeds go toward World Teacher Aid's educational programs in Africa and Central America. They can be found at www.writetogive.com.
