RIDE numbers in

Festive RIDE Programs have come to a conclusion in both Oxford and Norfolk Counties, although officers emphasize regular RIDE Programs are held throughout the year as part of ongoing enforcement.

Oxford County OPP Constable Michelle Murphy says 125 RIDE Programs were held throughout Oxford from November 24 through January 2. One impaired driving charge was laid as a result of enhanced enforcement says Murphy, along with ‘numerous’ Highway Traffic Act charges, for violations including improper seat belt usage.

A number of roadside tests were administered – and passed, with no warn-range results.

The numbers are comparative to the previous year’s campaign (November 25, 2011, to January 1, 2012) during which one charge of impaired driving and two warn-range suspensions resulted. During the 2010 RIDE campaign, 10 impaired driving charges resulted.

The comparably positive results from this year’s campaign were mitigated somewhat noted Murphy, by the fact a number of drinking-and-driving-related charges were laid in Oxford County outside of the RIDE Program itself.

A total of 198 checks were instituted in Norfolk County during its Festive RIDE Program, resulting in six drivers being charged with drinking-and-driving-related offences and 12 roadside suspensions issued.

By comparison, in 2011, officers conducted 277 checks, processed five drinking-and-driving-related charges and issued 12 roadside suspensions.

The OPP statistics were accompanied by a reminder that RIDE and regular enforcement targets drinking-and-driving year round in both counties. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, and if they choose to drink, to not drive.
