Bayham by-election March 25, 2013

The Municipality of Bayham will elect a new deputy mayor in a by-election scheduled for Monday, March 25, 2013.

Bayham council had agreed upon the framework for a Monday, April 1, 2013 by-election during a special meeting Thursday, December 13. Due to the fact that date is also Easter Monday, and preceded by Good Friday, the previous Monday was chosen as a viable alternative. Technically speaking, council authorizes a by-election and the clerk selects the date.

Monday, March 25 fits in an appropriate timeframe under the Municipal Act, is not a holiday, and is anticipated to both be convenient for winter ‘snowbirds’ and avoid inclement weather.

A by-law authorizing the by-election passed during Thursday’s (December 20) regular meeting of open council.

Bayham Clerk Linda Millard says one individual did express interest following the previous week’s special council meeting, but no one has picked up nomination papers as of noon, Friday (December 21).

“But they are ready.”

A nomination package has been uploaded to the Municipality of Bayham website. Alternatively, interested persons can pick them up from the municipality office in Straffordville, which may be a more convenient option, given the fact it includes close to 80 pages.

“It is lengthy,” Millard concluded.
